Since Wednesday, the weather has been awful as it was raining every day. Despite the downpours, fireworks have been going off every night regardlessly to celebrate Bonfire Night on November 5th (a day when the UK celebrates the failed Gunpowder Plot to blow up the Houses of Parliament in 1605). I am lucky enough to be able to watch the displays exploding with colour all over the city of Norwich from my flat, where it is nice and dry. Today is Remembrance Sunday, a day to remember the soldiers who had fought in the two World Wars and other conflicts and never came back with two minutes of silence.

This morning, as it was not raining for a change, I went for a short, silent walk around Waterloo Park to just listen to the sounds of nature. It was very peaceful with the exception of the sounds of traffic, distant hammering, church bells and from fellow park users talking to each other or to their dogs as they pass me by. Their was a lot of natural sounds too from birds. Though there is little bird song to be heard at this time of year, most of the bird sounds I can hear today are of simple noted calls. Robins were 'ticking', blackbirds were producing melancholic 'seep' notes with the odd alarm call chuckle, the chattering rattled 'chak-ak-ak-ak-ak' calls of magpies and the various sounds of tits and finches filled the air but not dominating the silence around the place. A perfect tribute to those who have lost their lives in battle.
