March 18th Strumpshaw Fen

Not the warmest of days today, in fact it was rather chilly. There wasn't too much to see either. At Fen Hide, there were a pair of Chinese water deer grazing the areas of cut stubble of reeds. In the woods, the simple yet repetitive song of the chiffchaff has returned. 'Chiff chaff chiff chaff chiff chiff chaff '. And at Reception Hide, I saw; teal, mallard, gadwall, shoveler, greylags, Canada geese, a pair of little grebes, marsh harriers, common gull and coot.

Many visitors have come in telling us that the car parks were quite full this morning. The reason, I tell them, is that there is a large photography group on the reserve today. They were guided by one of our wardens who made sure they didn't overcrowd the hides, etc. I found them in the woods at a stump taking photos of a pheasant.
